Lesson 1-2: Deformations, Effects, and Filters (last page)
- Unsharp Mask Filter
- I saved the most interesting filter for last. I did a number of examples using the Unsharp Mask filter, since this filter gave me such powerful control of the graphic effects.
There are three variables that you can set with the Unsharp Mask - the Radius, the Strength, and the Clipping. Although I am not sure what each variable really effects in the graphic, you can get an idea by comparing the different graphics I did. I tried to change only one of the variables each time so the altered effects could be seen. My take on the function of these variables, (from my experimentation) is as follows. - Radius - This appears to increase the area around the text that is affected.
- Stength - This appears to determine the sharpness of the effects that both clipping and radius have.
- Clipping - Along with the Radius effect, further defines the area around the text. It was hard to tell where Radius effects stopped and Clipping effects began.

| This is the original graphic with no filters applied. I am placing it here so you have a reference point for this filters effects. | |
| 30. Radius = 9. Strength = 100. Clipping = 0 This appears to add a lighter area around the text. | |
| 31. Radius = 9. Strength = 500. Clipping = 0 With the Strength turned up, the area around the text is really brightened. Also, notice that the lettered background is more emphasized. | |
| 32. Radius = 2. Strength = 500. Clipping = 0 By turning down the Radius setting here, the size of the area around the text is reduced, but the background emphasis is still evident. | |
| 33. Radius = 9. Strength = 500. Clipping = 10 Compare this with # 31. Increasing the Clipping de-emphazised the background. The area around the text also was affected. | |
| 34. Radius = 4. Strength = 500. Clipping = 10 Reducing the Radius from #33, appears to have little effect. But notice the white space around the text. It appears more defined. | |
| 35. Radius = 4. Strength = 500. Clipping = 2 Reducing the Clipping from #34, shows a more emphasized background, and a larger white area around the text. | |
| Done! Well, that's it for deformation / filter playtime. Back to work! | |
